Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “God speaks to other people… but not really to me”?
Maybe you’ve heard powerful stories—someone felt the Lord nudge them, someone received a clear word in prayer, someone had a dream that confirmed direction. And you’re over here like… I’m just trying to make it through Tuesday.
If that’s you, I want to gently (and boldly) remind you of something true:
God wants to speak to you personally.
Not just “in general.” Not only through someone else. Not only when you finally “get it together.”
He wants to speak to you—by name, with intention, with love.
God Is a Communicator, Not a Mystery to Endure
From Genesis to Revelation, God reveals Himself as a God who speaks.
- He walked with Adam and Eve in the garden.
- He called Abraham by name.
- He spoke to Moses face-to-face as a friend.
- He led Israel with a cloud by day and fire by night.
- And in the New Covenant, He placed His Spirit within you.
Jesus didn’t come to make God feel far away. He came to bring you near.
“My sheep hear My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)
That verse isn’t reserved for “super spiritual” people. It’s the normal language of relationship.
“But I Don’t Hear God…”
Hearing God doesn’t always sound like an audible voice. For most believers, it’s more like:
- a gentle inner knowing
- a scripture that suddenly feels alive
- a consistent theme God highlights repeatedly
- a strong sense of peace (or a check in your spirit)
- a picture in your mind during prayer
- a phrase that won’t leave you alone
- a dream that lingers with unusual clarity
- wise counsel that confirms what God has already been stirring
And sometimes, God is speaking, but we’ve been taught to expect Him to shout.
“After the fire came a gentle whisper…” (1 Kings 19:12)
If you’ve been waiting for the dramatic, don’t miss the devoted. God is faithful in the whisper.
Why Personal Revelation Matters
When God speaks to you personally, it does more than give you information—it forms you.
Personal revelation:
- anchors your identity when circumstances shake
- strengthens your faith when emotions fluctuate
- brings comfort you can’t manufacture
- clarifies timing (so you don’t rush)
- exposes lies (so you can heal)
- confirms direction (so you can move with peace)
In other words: God’s voice is not a luxury. It’s part of how you live rooted and steady.
Three Reasons We Struggle to Hear God Clearly
If you’re feeling stuck, it doesn’t mean God is silent. Sometimes there are common blockers.
1) Noise overload
We live in constant input: social media, opinions, notifications, pressure, comparison. God can cut through noise, but often He invites us to make room.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
Stillness isn’t punishment. It’s positioning.
2) Performance pressure
Many believers assume God speaks after they pray better, read more, or “get consistent.” God speaks from relationship, not reward. You don’t earn His voice. You receive it because you’re His.
“You have received the Spirit of adoption…” (Romans 8:15)
3) Fear of getting it wrong
This one is so real. Sometimes we don’t lean in because we’re afraid we’ll miss it.
Learning to hear God is like learning any relationship—it grows with time, practice, and trust. God is a Father. He isn’t waiting to shame you. He’s leading you.
How to Start Hearing God Personally (Simple + Practical)
If you want to grow in this, here’s a gentle framework you can try this week.
Step 1: Ask one simple question
It’s not twenty questions. Just one. 😌
Try:
- “Holy Spirit, what do You want me to know today?”
- “What are You highlighting in my heart?”
- “What truth do I need to receive right now?”
Step 2: Write what comes—without judging it yet
Grab a journal and write the first impressions you receive. Don’t edit. Don’t overthink. Just record.
God often speaks in seed form before it becomes full clarity.
Step 3: Test it with Scripture + fruit
God will never contradict His Word or His character.
Ask:
- Does this align with Scripture?
- Does it produce peace, humility, love, conviction, hope?
- Does it lead me toward Jesus—or toward fear/control?
“Test everything; hold fast what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21)
Step 4: Look for confirmation over time
God is kind. If something matters, He knows how to confirm it.
You’ll often notice a pattern:
- the same theme keeps returning
- messages, scriptures, and conversations align
- the peace remains even when you wait
A Gentle Reminder for the One Who Feels “Left Out”
If you’ve felt overlooked—like God is speaking to everyone else and you didn’t get the memo—God has not skipped you.
He is not distant. He is not withholding. He is not playing games with His children.
Sometimes the journey is simply learning how He speaks to you, because your relationship with Him is personal. Your story with God isn’t meant to be secondhand.
Try This Today: A 5-Minute Listening Practice
If you want a starting point, do this right now (or later today):
- Take 60 seconds of quiet. Breathe.
- Pray: “Jesus, I belong to You. I’m listening.”
- Read John 10:27 slowly.
- Ask: “What do You want to say to me personally today?”
- Write down whatever comes—one sentence is enough.
Small moments build strong confidence.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You that You are a God who speaks. Thank You that Your voice is not reserved for a select few, but available to Your children through the Holy Spirit. Teach us how You speak to us personally. Quiet the noise. Remove the fear. Heal the places where we assumed You were distant. And help us recognize Your voice with increasing clarity, peace, and trust. In Jesus’ name, amen.
